"Within these walls... family... friends... home." A realtor commissioned Kerry to paint this mural for his office. It is a rendering of his Sycamore Springs neighborhood, a charming community in Indianapolis designed after colonial Williamsburg. The canvas mural, painted in acrylics, measures 10 1/2 ft. by 31 inches.
How a Canvas Mural is Installed | | Canvas murals are applied to a wall much like wallpaper is. But all paper hangers are not experienced in hanging canvases. Kerry enlists the help of Jim Stevens of Stevens Wall-coverings in Indianapolis. Jim is an expert at hanging painted canvas and is the only man she trusts with the job! First, Jim lays the mural out and pastes up the back using heavy duty paste. Then he will 'book' the canvas (fold wet sides together) and allow the paste to set up, or become tacky. In the meantime, he rolls paste onto the wall and lets that set up as well. This ensures a tight bond between the canvas and the wall. The mural is lifted onto the wall, and with the help of wife Suzanne, Jim flattens it with a special tool then makes sure the mural is plumb and level. They use wet sponges to press out any bubbles. Finally, he cuts out around any light switches or electrical sockets, and carefully trims off the excess canvas. Kerry can later camouflage switchplates so they do not detract from the painting. The finished mural is pictured in Gallery 3. |
